Chapter 12

Sondra laughed every time she thought of the story that Clint had told her about the call. He’d told her the girl had sounded terrified. Then when she’d gone to the building to see her to scare her a bit more the girl didn’t even have the nerve to show up. She looked out the hotel window again and wondered where Clint was. He was late, again.

Sondra thought it couldn’t be but a few more days of this forced confinement. It had been three weeks since the fire and, as far as she could see, no one had mentioned it in the paper for over a week. She was ready to resume her normal life and get back to selling real-estate. She had marked a couple of obits in the paper over the week, wanting to get to the family before anyone else did. She so loved a good sale.

When she heard a car in the front of her hotel room she looked out again and suddenly dropped the curtain. The police again. This was the third time this week that they’d driven by this dump. Either someone had told on her or the place was being watched because of the drugs and prostitutes that came and went like the night.

After a short time she heard another vehicle come near her. She was about to check to see if it was the police again when she heard a key in the lock. Clint, thank goodness, was finally home. She ran to meet him at the door and stopped when he had someone with him. She tightened the belt on her robe and glared at the two men.

“Hello, bitch,” he said. It was his usual greeting, but she didn’t like it when he did it in front of anyone else. “This is my buddy from work. He’s going to stay the night and then, in the morning, we’re going to go and mess up our girl. He’s going to help us.”

They had discussed bringing in another person to help. Both of them had to lay low most of the time, him because he had a wife and kid, her because she was wanted. The news had run endless pictures of her nightly until recently. Now it was just once a day. She felt both happy and pissed because she was no longer the lead story.

“Do you think that’s a good idea? I mean, I don’t know him. And how much is he expecting to get a cut of the money when we go back to work?” The slap knocked her across the room. Her body responded to it like a drug. When he stood over her she looked over at the other man and watched as he took his belt off.

“Jon here is going to fuck you too. You got a problem with that?” Clint picked her up by her hair and she went with him. It was either that or he’d jerk until she was bald. “Take off that thing and get in the position.
